House of Books and Literature of Iran

House of Books and Literature of Iran is a non-profit and non-governmental institution that was established for the purpose of publishing Islamic culture and civilization with the motive of uplifting the fabric of contemporary culture and developing literature and book culture and reading and supporting the publishing industry of Iran.

For the activities of this institution, the following missions have been defined by Iran's Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance:

 

Holding various national and international awards, festivals and events in the fields of books and literature

The most prestigious national and international book events in Iran are organized by the House of Books and Literature of Iran. A brief introduction of these events is as follows:

  1. The Book of the Year Award of the Islamic Republic of Iran: This award is given to the authors of the best works in the fields of general, philosophy and psychology, religion, social sciences, language, applied sciences, art, literature, history and geography are awarded. The selected works in each section are selected by a group of the best and most influential scientists and specialists in that specific field.
  2. World Book of the Year Award of the Islamic Republic of Iran: The World Book of the Year Award is held concurrently with the awarding of the Book of the Year Award of the Islamic Republic of Iran, during which the best works published around the world in the fields of Iranology and Islamology are appreciated by inviting the authors or their representatives to Tehran.
  3. Jalal Al-e-Ahmad Literary Award: It is an award for fiction and narrative writing that started its work in 2008. This award, which is named after the famous Iranian short story writer Jalal Al-e-Ahmad, is given every year to the best works in the fields of stories and novels, short story collections, literary criticism and documentaries.
  4. 4. Fajr International Poetry Festival: Fajr Poetry Festival also started in 2006 and is awarded to the best collection of published poems every winter. The celebration of this event energizes Iranian poets, enabling them to further this national art form of Iranians by organizing poetry circles and workshops.
  5. Provincial Book of the Year Awards: House of Books and Literature of Iran also organizes the provincial book of the year award and awards are given to the best researches published in that province or researches about that province.

 

Holding Tehran International Book Fair

This event is held in May every year and is known as one of the most important and biggest cultural events in Iran. This exhibition is known as one of the most famous book exhibitions in the world. Publishers from other nations throughout the world as well as Iran's neighbors are present at every occasion.

 

Holding the Book Week of the Islamic Republic of Iran

The Iranian Book Week, which is held in the last week of the second month of the autumn season every year, is one of the national celebrations of Iranians. This national festival is organized by all of Iran's governing institutions with the goal of promoting written culture and igniting interest and enthusiasm in books and reading among the general public, particularly children, teenagers, and young people, throughout the nation.

 

Participation in book fairs of other countries

House of Books and Literature of Iran either participates in book fairs in other countries on behalf of Iran's publishing industry and presents Iranian works to the audiences of those countries, or it facilitates the presence of Iranian publishers in those fairs.

 

Other duties of House of Books and Literature of Iran

  • Holding large book fairs alternately in the provinces of Iran.
  • Supporting all circles of the publishing industry such as publishers, booksellers, consumers, etc.
  • Providing services to authors, translators and activists in the field of books, such as granting loans, issuing certificates and letters of recommendation, etc.
  • Holding educational workshops in the field of poetry and fiction.
  • Allocating ISBN and ISMN.
  • Collecting, publishing and analyzing the country's book information bank, informing about books, holding meetings related to the field of publishing and books in institutions known as Sarai-e Kebat and Sarai-e Ahl Qalam.

 

Four vice-chairs oversee poetry and fiction, economics and culture, book and culture, administration and finance, public relations, and international affairs management under the framework of House of Books and Literature of Iran. Iran Book News Agency (IBNA), the nation's sole dedicated book news organization, is also active in this collection. This institution has also developed its first online book TV channel.
